Leading Somali human rights defender shot dead in Mogadishu
Last week Isse Abdi Isse, the Chairperson of Kisima Peace and Development Organization was killed in front of the hotel where he normally resides in Mogadishu. The Human Rights House Foundation joins the Somali Human Rights Defenders Network in condemning the killing.
Arrested for visiting Thich Quang Do
Moments after handing over to Thich Quang Do the diploma for the Rafto Human Rights Prize for 2006, Therese Jebsen of the Rafto Foundation and interpreter Kieu Tran was arrested in Saigon last week. They were both released, but Tran was brought in for questioning again last night. - This arrest makes me ashamed and humiliated for my country and people, said Quang Do in an interview.
Russian independent military reporter found dead
The Russian reporter Ivan Safronov from “Kommersant” newspaper died under obscure circumstances in Moscow on March the 2nd. Investigators considered suicide the most likely explanation. Safronov’s relatives and colleagues have doubts and will conduct their own investigation.

Egyptian blogs begin new conversation for women
Like many people living in countries where expressing unorthodox views can be difficult, Egyptians have turned to the Internet. The recent surge in blogging has given many Egyptians the opportunity to voice opinions about a range of subjects. Women in particular have tapped into the blogosphere, and female bloggers speak up on relevant issues facing women, considerably more confident than if they were to voice these opinions using a less anonymous medium. Appeal on East Turkestan
Chinese authorities have resolved to “strike hard” against voices of opposition in East Turkestan. The Rafto Foundation and Human Rights House Foundation have signed an appeal by the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) to the EU.
