Peace Education: Exploring Ethical and Philosophical Foundations

Peace education is now well recognized within international legal instruments and within critical educational literature as an important aspect of education. Despite this, little attention has been given in the critical literature to the philosophical foundations for peace education and the rationale for peace education thus remains substantially an assumed one. This investigation explores some possible ethico-philosophical foundations for peace education, through an examination of five specific ethical traditions: 1) virtue ethics, whereby peace may be interpreted as a virtue, and/or virtue is interpreted as peacefulness, and peace education as education in that virtue; 2) consequentialist ethics, whereby peace education may be interpreted as education regarding the consequences of our action and inaction, both as individuals and collectivities; 3) conservative political ethics, whereby peace education may be interpreted as emphasizing the importance of the evolution of social institutions and the importance of ordered and lawful social change; 4) aesthetic ethics, whereby peace may be interpreted as something beautiful and valuable in itself, and peace education as emphasizing the importance of that beauty and value; and 5) the ethics of care, whereby care may be interpreted as a core element in peace, and peace education as encouraging trust and engagement with the other. The study addresses major contributions to each of these ethical traditions, the strengths and weaknesses of the tradition, and the ways in which the tradition provides support for peace education. It is argued in the thesis that each tradition provides only a partial basis for peace education, and that ultimately a holistic and integrative understanding is required, one that encourages a culture of peace.

Stop using ‘dearie’, nurses told

Nurses are advised against behaviour that could be deemed patronising
Calling older patients “dearie” or “love” is set to be ruled out as offensive by new guidelines from the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Nurses should speak “courteously and respectfully” and use patients’ preferred names, the NMC recommends.

But terms of endearment can be used in some areas if they are part of everyday speech - it may appear unusual if they are omitted, the draft guidance says.

The Conservatives said the guidance was “ridiculous”.

Heute widmen wir uns ganz und gar der Afro-Peruanischen Präsenz, ihrem kulturellen Widerstand und ihrer Kreativität. Der renommierte Musiker und Musikhistoriker Rafael Santa Cruz ist ein Kenner und Verfechter der afro-peruanischen Kultur und für seine herausragende Spielweise auf dem Cajon (Kistentrommel) bekannt. Dementsprechend wird der Cajon, der ein Mittel des kulturellen Widerstands versklavter Afrikaner/innen gegen ihre Unterdrücker war, im Mittelpunkt des Konzerts stehen. Capoeira ist ein afrobrasilianischer Kampf-Tanz, dessen Wurzeln auf den Widerstand versklavter Afrikaner/innen in Brasilien zurückgehen. Zu Rhythmus und Gesang bewegen sich mindestens zwei Personen in der Kreismitte. Capoeira wirkt wie eine rituelle Tanzform mit kreativen Akrobatikeinsätzen, Mimik und Körperausdruck. Little Senegal / Sklavenhandel und Globalisierung / Afro-Peruanische Musik

nach dem bewegenden musikalischen Road-Movie „Return to Gorée“ gestern, der sich mit dem musikalischen und kulturellen Band zwischen Afrika und seinen Diasporen befasste, beschäftigen wir uns heute mit dem Thema „Folgen und Konsequenzen des Sklavenhandels“. Rachid Bouchareb erneuert in seinem Film „Little Senegal“ universelle Themen wie Exil, das Vergessen der Herkunft und die erschreckende Nacktheit der modernen Welt und behandelt diese aus einer aktuellen afrikanischen Perspektive. Als ehemaliger Museumsführer im „Haus der Sklaven“ auf Gorée ist Alloune von der Vergangenheit seines Volkes fasziniert. Er beschließt daher, in die USA zu reisen und sich auf die Suche nach den Nachfahren seiner Ahnen zu begeben, die vor zweihundert Jahren als Sklaven dorthin deportiert worden sind. Sein Wunsch ist, seine Familie, über Grenzen und Jahrhunderte hinweg, wieder zusammenzufü hren.

Er wird tatsächlich fündig. In „Little Senegal“, einem afrikanischen Wohnviertel in Harlem. Alloune trifft seine entfernte Kusine Ida, die sich in ihrem täglichen Überlebenskampf überhaupt nicht für die Vergangenheit interessiert und ihm zunächst sehr abweisend gegenüber tritt. Alloun begegnet auch seinem Neffen Hassan, der illegal Taxi fährt, und dessen Verlobter Biram. Er trifft die junge Eileen, schwanger und alleinstehend, und Karim, der alles für eine Green Card tun würde. Allounes Verständnis der Geschichte wird durch die Erfahrung der Gegenwart ergänzt, die ihm sämtliche Widersprüche und Konflikte zwischen den USA und Afrika mehr oder weniger drastisch vor Augen führt.

Die „Maafa“ (Suaheli für Katastrophe) war ein politisches, vor allem aber ökonomisches System, das drei Jahrhunderte „erfolgreich“ gewirkt hat. Am morgigen Freitag widmen wir uns ganz und gar der Afro-Peruanischen Präsenz, ihrem kulturellen Widerstand und ihrer Kreativität. Wenig bekannt ist, dass Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts mehr als die Hälfte der Bevölkerung Limas – damals eine der wichtigsten Städte im spanischen Imperium – afrikanischer Herkunft war. Der renommierte Musiker und Musikhistoriker Rafael Santa Cruz ist ein Kenner und Verfechter der afroperuanischen Kultur und für seine herausragende Spielweise auf dem Cajon (Kistentrommel) bekannt. Dementsprechend wird der Cajon, der ein Mittel des kulturellen Widerstands peruanischer Sklaven gegen die Eroberer war, im Mittelpunkt des Konzerts um 20.30 Uhr stehen. “Back to the Roots” heißt es dann, wenn der Kurator der TRANSMUSIKALE Abdourahmane Diop im zweiten Teil des Konzerts dazu stößt.

MSc programme in Migration, Mobility and Development

This innovative new programme in the Department of Development Studies offers students the opportunity to combine study and analysis of critical perspectives on development and the increasingly important and related field of migration studies.

The MSc in Migration, Mobility and Development will focus attention on the political economy of
migration from a historical perspective, major trends in migration theories, and different forms
of and approaches to the study of migration and displacement.

The programme draws on the expertise of staff in development, migration and forced migration
contexts from the Development Studies department, and encourages inter-disciplinary dialogue
with other relevant departments and centres within SOAS.

Programme Aims and Career Options

The MSc in Migration, Mobility and Development will provide a thorough analytical grounding
in international migration including different types of forced and voluntary migration, facilitating
the development of specialized knowledge of particular case studies, as well as overall trends
and theoretical frameworks. A rigorous academic programme, it will also give students the
confidence to think in policy relevant terms and will be equally valuable to those proceeding to
professional employment in the sector with international organizations, NGOs and government
bodies, and for students intending to go on to carry out PhD research.

Entry Requirements

Normally a good Upper Second class BA (Hons) degree in a social science subject. Relevant
professional experience will also be taken into account.
