Specialization Peace and Conflict Studies (120 Swedish points / 120 ECTS)
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University is inviting students to apply for its Master Programme in Politics and International Studies, Specialization Peace and Conflict Studies.
We are accepting international applications for the 2010 intake of students in to the programme between 1 December 2009 and 15 January 2010.
There is a separate application period for Swedish applicants.
The academic degree (Master of Arts in Social Science) is given in accordance with the standards and quality assurance standards of the European higher education area. The programme takes two years
fulltime studies.
Peace and conflict studies in Uppsala is an interdisciplinary approach within social science to the study of armed conflict and related political and social processes. The Department offers comprehensive education from undergraduate programmes, over the two-year Master programme up to the PhD level. The courses offered by the department give students the theoretical and methodological tools
for analysing the complex empirical phenomena. Questions commonly asked within the field include for example: Why do states and nonstate actors choose violent means for solving their political disputes?
How peace processes are best designed to reach durable solutions to existing conflicts? What particular challenges do societies face in the aftermath of a civil war? How do states identify and deal with security threats?
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research is proud to offer a distinguished environment for studying these questions. Almost all of its teachers are active in research at the department, which means that the education is well founded in contemporary research within the field. Moreover, the relatively small size of the department allows for close ties between the students and the teachers.
The analytic skills gained through our courses and programs are useful for students aiming to become either academics or practitioners in their professional life. Students from our department have proceeded to careers within e.g. The United Nations, The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, The Swedish Military Intelligence Agency, and The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation.
